Earth spins faster today: Shortest day in 2025
Have you felt that time has passed more quickly? According to information reported by the website News ao Minuto, this Tuesday (August 5) was one of the shortest days recorded in 2025.
The Earth rotated at a slightly higher speed than usual, resulting in a total duration of only 86,398.75 seconds minus 1.25 milliseconds from the usual 24 hours. And this is not an isolated incident. Since July, there have been four occasions when the planet accelerated its rotation. The days 9, 10, and 22 of July also had durations below average.
Although the Earth's rotation has been slowing down since 1973, due to factors such as the gravitational pull of the Moon and the friction caused by tides, in recent years there has been an observed reversal of this trend with a sudden and unexpected acceleration.
This phenomenon continues to intrigue scientists, who study the potential impacts these variations may have on the functioning of global time systems.
