Bolsonaro has been placed under house arrest; STF tightens measures against former president

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court declared today (4) the house arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The decision replaces other restrictions, including the use of the electronic ankle monitor and night confinement. The escalation occurred due to violations of previously imposed measures, especially through the publication of content on third-party profiles.

Bolsonaro was initially subjected to an ankle monitor in July by Moraes' decision, who pointed out a risk of flight and attempts to obstruct investigations into the attempted coup. He was also prohibited from contacting those being investigated and using social media.

Despite these restrictions, the former president's defense was unable to adequately justify the use of publications on networks associated with his parliamentary children. The minister considered that Bolsonaro deliberately interpreted the rules to circumvent judicial determinations, which motivated the new measure.

Bolsonaro is now serving full house arrest, without authorized exit without judicial approval. The ankle monitor remains in use, and monitoring of his movements and contacts has been intensified. Future violations may lead to even harsher measures.

Political allies classified the decision as 'abuse of authority' and anticipate pressures in Congress. Parliamentarians linked to the PL and Novo promise to react and advance proposals such as amnesty for those accused of the coup acts of January 8, 2023.

Experts point out that the adoption of house arrest represents a consolidated escalation in the case. The possibility of total imprisonment may be considered if there are new indications or non-compliance with court orders.
