A significant part of internal conflict is due to information entering one's mind that exceeds one's ability to cope.
For example, when I swim, water will inevitably enter my nose. I know there is a possibility of contracting a brain-eating amoeba, which might cause me to worry and become anxious, even though the likelihood is as low as one in hundreds of millions.
When playing at the beach, I could get cut by an oyster shell, and I might contract Vibrio vulnificus, which could lead to amputation or death.
The human brain cannot process probabilistic information, leading to anxiety; it might be better not to know.
