Roman Storm, co-founder of the cryptocurrency mixing service Tornado Cash, has sought help in urgently raising $500,000 ahead of the trial scheduled for Monday on charges of money laundering and violating sanctions.

On Saturday, Storm wrote on X that he is facing a 'critical shortage of funds' and needs to raise $500,000 in the coming days, as well as needing another $1 million in the next few weeks to cover trial expenses.

'My team is working tirelessly to protect code as freedom of speech, to protect software development, and to stand up against government overreach that threatens us all,' he added.

In May, the organization Free Pertsev & Storm, created to provide legal assistance to the founders of Tornado Cash, estimated that the total trial costs for Storm's case would be $2 million. However, on Friday, Storm stated that his trial costs would be $3.5 million as the trial could last up to four weeks, which is double the originally expected two weeks, due to 'complex legal arguments, as well as unforeseen witnesses and evidence.'
Storm was arrested in August 2023 on charges of money laundering, conspiracy to conduct unlicensed money transmission, and conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions. If convicted, he faces up to 45 years in prison.

On Friday, Storm's lawyers attempted to delay the court proceedings, arguing that the prosecution provided witness testimony after the deadline.
Judge Catherine Faylla, overseeing Storm's criminal case, stated that she would not allow the mention of U.S. Treasury sanctions imposed against Tornado Cash and lifted in March.

In April, the cryptocurrency lobbying group DeFi Education Fund appealed to the Trump administration to stop the so-called 'unlawful prosecution' of open-source software developers, including Roman Storm.
57% of the required amount has been raised for the trial of the Tornado Cash case
Storm is trying to raise a total of $3.5 million. At the time of writing, Storm has managed to raise $1.96 million, which is approximately 57% of the required amount.
As donations are made in Ethereum (ETH), the fundraising amount may fluctuate. According to Nansen, ETH is currently trading at $3,030, which is 2.9% higher than in the last 24 hours.

Last month, the Ethereum Foundation stated that it would allocate $500,000 and additional community donations up to $750,000 for Storm's defense.

Bill Warren from MetaCartel stated that MetaCartel DAO directed all remaining funds in its treasury to support this case.
