On Monday, Donald Trump warned from the White House that Russia has exactly 50 days to end the war with Ukraine or face 100% additional tariffs. In a conversation with reporters, Trump said he had spoken several times with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone, and these conversations always sound friendly, but ultimately mean nothing.

'I talk to him a lot about how to do it, and I always hang up and say, 'Well, that was a good phone call,'' Trump said. 'And then rockets are launched at Kyiv or another city, and I say, 'Strange.' His tone changed sharply when he made it clear that the time for empty conversations is over. 'After this happens three or four times, you say, 'Conversations mean nothing.'

According to CNN, Trump previously set a two-week deadline for Putin to take things seriously. That was almost three months ago. Since then, Russia has continued to bomb Ukrainian cities, including civilian facilities, prompting Trump to post on Truth Social:

'I feel like maybe he doesn't want to stop the war; he's just dragging me along.' Now he has given Moscow a deadline until the beginning of September to agree to a ceasefire, otherwise it faces massive trade sanctions.

Trump stated that American weapons are being supplied to Ukraine through NATO
At the briefing, Trump made it clear that the USA will continue to provide military support to Ukraine, but through NATO. He stated that the alliance will be responsible for both funding and distributing weapons, rather than the USA directly.

The president did not provide additional details on the type and amount of weapons being supplied, but the timing of this step indicates that he is coordinating his actions with European partners while simultaneously putting pressure on Putin. 'We will impose secondary tariffs if we do not reach a deal in 50 days,' Trump warned. 'It's very simple, and they will be 100%.'

Secondary tariffs affect not only Russia but also any other country doing business with it. Trump did not name specific countries, but such actions could impact global trade networks associated with Moscow. This statement caused a sharp rise in the Moscow Stock Exchange quotes, which seems strange given the threat.

However, market analysts believe that investors are preparing for something even more serious. Earlier this year, there were reports of a possible introduction of 500% tariffs, which apparently did not happen. Therefore, so far traders are reacting to lower-than-expected figures, even though this is still painful.

Trump was also asked how far he is willing to go in the event of further escalation by Putin. 'Don't ask me such questions,' he replied sharply. But he added, 'I want the war to end.' He mentioned that Russia needs to stop the war and start rebuilding its economy. 'They need to get their economy back on track,' Trump said. 'Russia has huge potential.' He insisted that the country should use its resources for trade, not destruction.

Trump reacted to the sanctions bill but maintained his distance.
Trump also commented on the sanctions bill currently under discussion in Congress, which proposes tightening sanctions against Russia. He said it could be useful but refrained from making any promises. 'Not sure we need it, but it's good they're doing it,' he said.

After a few seconds, Trump added, 'I don't want them to waste time.' Trump left the door open, stating that the bill 'might be very useful, we'll see.' Senate Majority Leader John Thune is expected to arrive at the White House for a meeting, and a Senate vote on the bill is scheduled for next week.

During his communication with reporters, Trump also reiterated that his talks with Putin are ongoing but have changed nothing. 'I talk to him a lot,' Trump said. 'The conversations are always very pleasant, but conversations mean nothing when rockets are hitting cities.' He did not mention upcoming negotiations and did not confirm whether Putin reacted to the new 50-day deadline.

As Putin continues his campaign in Ukraine and Trump now threatens full-scale trade retaliatory measures, all eyes will be on whether Russia will change course or continue as is. If a deal is not reached and tariffs come into effect, they will hit the already struggling Russian economy and shake global trade, given that all countries continue to do business with Moscow.
