🇲🇽🤝 "MEXICO IS ALREADY IN NEGOTIATIONS" WITH THE US, EBRARD SAYS AFTER TRUMP'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF A 30% TARIFF
Trump has just threatened with 30% tariffs on Mexico and the European Union starting August 1. In his letter to Sheinbaum, he says that "Mexico has been helping, BUT what it has done IS NOT ENOUGH" to stop fentanyl and the cartels.
Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, confirms that a Mexican delegation already met on Friday with US officials. They told them that the tariffs would be an "unfair deal" but they are negotiating an "alternative to protect businesses and jobs on both sides of the border".
Mexico is the main trading partner of the US with an exchange of $800 billion annually. The 30% is higher than any previous threat. Trump says that if Mexico retaliates, he will add that percentage TO the already imposed 30%.
Ebrard had celebrated in April the "preferential deal" when Mexico avoided reciprocal tariffs. Now Sheinbaum's strategy of "firmness and coolness" faces its greatest test. Mexico has already threatened with retaliatory tariffs that would make EVERYTHING more expensive in the US.
📊 Trump changed the rules again: first promised 25%, then paused for T-MEC products, now raises to 30%. The EU also faces 30% after Trump said they are "more unpleasant than China". The global trade chaos continues.
