I believe the Trump administration defined the BRICS countries as an anti-American alliance and threatened to impose tariffs, which essentially reflects the concentrated outbreak of U.S. strategic anxiety regarding the trend of global multipolarization.
The BRICS countries, by expanding to 11 member countries and 10 partner countries, have formed a cooperative framework covering nearly half of the world's population and 30% of the global economic output. Their promotion of local currency settlements and financial infrastructure directly challenges the dollar's hegemony, which is at the core of what the U.S. sees as hostile.
This move by the U.S. carries multiple risks of backlash: historical experience shows that the Tariff Act of 1930 led to a 66% drop in global trade, and the current tariff increase on BRICS countries may trigger a chain reaction; the close economic and trade ties of 46.2 trillion yuan (2024 data) among BRICS countries and the 1.2 trillion U.S. dollar currency swap agreements form a basis for countermeasures, with U.S. agricultural states already losing 4.7 billion dollars due to reciprocal sanctions.
Geopolitically, U.S. policies are accelerating the fragmentation of global alliances. After partners like Vietnam join in 2025, BRICS will cover a population of over 3 billion, while the trade dependency of the Global South on the U.S. has decreased from 28% in 2010 to 19%, and the proportion of trade within BRICS has increased to 12.3%.
This policy is essentially a continuation of American zero-sum thinking, which is difficult to sustain in today's deeply integrated globalization. The BRICS countries provide alternative development pathways for developing countries through an inclusive cooperation framework. If the U.S. insists on pushing for a tariff war, it will not only accelerate the loss of its international credit but may also promote the formation of a truly multipolar global order.
