BNB Chain, which has taken a notable step in the crypto world today, is preparing to halve the block production speed on the Smart Chain with the Maxwell hardfork. Thus, transactions will occur much faster and the user experience will improve significantly. The speed increase will be made possible by the communication and synchronization innovations presented in technical proposals BEP-524, BEP-563, and BEP-564. This development was announced on the official BNB Chain website on June 29, 2025.
The technology behind 0.75 seconds
The BEP-524 proposal reduces the block interval, previously decreased from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds by the Lorentz update, back to 0.75 seconds. This will allow DeFi protocols, GameFi applications, and wallet transactions to be approved very quickly. Developers will benefit from this speed by updating the timers they use in smart contracts.
BEP-563 reduces the risk of missing out on games by optimizing simultaneous messaging between validators, while BEP-564 allows nodes to fetch blocks in bulk thanks to new message types. This way, inconsistencies in the chain can be resolved within seconds. The collaboration of the two proposals greatly reduces delays experienced in the network's lower layers.
From the end-user perspective, swap, mint, or bridge transactions will occur almost instantaneously, eliminating the issues caused by delays. Low latency will reduce the risk of price fluctuations on decentralized exchanges, while also supporting high-frequency trading strategies that seek microsecond advantages. This could lead to a significant increase in network traffic.
Validator performance and system innovations
As the transaction volume of validators increases, the peer-to-peer messaging system developed with the Maxwell update keeps the network load balanced. The epoch length is increased to 1000 blocks, while the turn time is updated to 16 blocks. Nevertheless, the turnaround time remains fixed at 12 seconds. Thanks to faster cycles, the transaction finalization time has been reduced to as low as 1.875 seconds.
