History and Significance

The original World Trade Center complex was designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki and officially opened on April 4, 1973.

It included seven buildings, with the North Tower (WTC 1) and the South Tower (WTC 2) standing as iconic symbols of New York’s skyline.

Each tower was 110 stories high, and they became symbols of globalization and American economic power.
