Pavel Durov's warning about state censorship in the cryptocurrency sector in France
Telegram founder Pavel Durov warned about the increasing risk of state censorship in France, especially in the field of cryptocurrency. In an interview with French media, he emphasized that social order would be easily disrupted as authorities continuously expand their power to regulate digital platforms.
He opposed excessive reliance on regulations such as the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires cryptocurrency exchanges to ensure clean content. According to Durov, these legal frameworks are like 'Trojan horses,' exploiting the consumer protection slogan to mask political censorship.
Opposing censorship demands from French intelligence
In the interview, Durov accused French agencies of directly contacting him to demand censorship of political content on Telegram. He recounted a meeting at Hôtel de Crillon with Nicolas Lerner, the head of French intelligence, where he was pressured to censor news related to the 2025 Romanian presidential election.
Durov refused, arguing that Telegram's neutrality policy reflects a commitment not to interfere in politics. He warned that these demands reflect a larger trend of governments attempting to control information under the pretext of combating misleading information.
In August 2024, Durov was arrested in France under controversial circumstances. He stated that he was not yet clear on the reasons but emphasized that this highlights the instability of cryptocurrency freedom even in democracies.
Asia reacts: Malaysia prosecutes Telegram channels
The latest information shows that the Malaysian telecommunications regulator has filed a civil lawsuit against two Telegram channels “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas”. These channels disseminate unverified content that could disrupt social order and erode trust in national organizations, including cryptocurrency platforms.
The Malaysian media agency explained that this action stemmed from Telegram's continuous failure to control user-generated content. This is Malaysia's first lawsuit against a social media platform over unverified harmful content.
With nearly 1.2 million followers, channels like “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas” are spreading unverified information that could negatively affect the reputation of public authorities and the cryptocurrency market in the region.
