What do we see amid the dazzling numbers and noise?
Hello everyone, I am ZenMusk, an old friend who observes and communicates with you at Bluebird meetings. Recently, walking around in the cryptocurrency world, you can definitely feel a particularly 'hot' energy. That feeling, how to put it? It's like everyone is in a high-speed machine, with all the indicators swinging rapidly.
This 'frenzied appearance' has several particularly obvious characteristics. First, there are the token prices, which can sometimes be heart-pounding, with astonishing short-term increases. Next, the number of community members has exploded, seemingly overnight, with many groups growing from hundreds to tens of thousands. Furthermore, the project's promotion and marketing are overwhelming, with various activities happening one after another, fearing to miss out on traffic and attention. These phenomena combined create a particularly heated surface for the community, with everyone's tone particularly high, filled with emotions of 'it's about to take off' and a strong desire for quick profits.
From my observations, this is actually quite an interesting phenomenon. It reflects a collective psychological state on a macro level, where people are particularly sensitive to opportunities in uncertain environments and are easily driven by short-term gains. Behind this lies a little 'me' in many of us, yearning to be seen, desiring quick recognition (often in terms of wealth).
See the surface, but don't stop at the surface.
But at Bluebird meetings, we always like to think one step further, looking through phenomena to see the essence. Can this 'frenzied appearance' truly represent everything about the community, or even its core? I think not necessarily.
Just like what impressed me in our document discussing corporate mission, there’s a phrase that roughly means, many times we see an 'internal projection', the way we wish things to be, rather than how they actually are. In the rapidly changing cryptocurrency space, prices and user numbers are the most direct feedback, so it’s easy for everyone to use them as measures for everything. But it's like only focusing on the speed and mileage on the dashboard without checking if the engine is healthy or if the tires are worn.
This is exactly what this book aims to remind us. If a community is merely built on these 'frenzied appearances', and everyone is just chasing money, its foundation is incredibly fragile. Once the market deteriorates or a new 'hot topic' arises, members may quickly leave. This mode of only looking at external numbers while neglecting internal connections and values is actually fraught with crisis.
Take some recent events as an example, such as certain new tokens or projects, which may fluctuate dramatically in price due to some discussions or short-term promotions, causing a stir in the community. Everyone is discussing 'taking over' or 'cutting losses'. This emotion and behavior are typical examples driven by the frenzy of appearances. Such phenomena occur every so often; sometimes a certain sector becomes popular, sometimes a new concept emerges, all accompanied by similar 'frenzied appearances'.
Look inward, seeking real strength.
So, when we see this 'frenzied appearance', it’s worth being a bit more aware. This excitement objectively exists, but it is just one side of the community, often the most unstable and easily changeable side.
A truly vital and sustainable community needs to construct deeper connections and values beneath these appearances. This requires us to shift our focus from external numbers to the community's essence—members' growth, mutual trust, shared beliefs, and whether we are genuinely creating meaningful things.
This may not sound as exciting as chasing hot topics, but as the introduction of the book says, ignoring the attention to the 'heart' makes it impossible to build a soulful, sustainable community. Understanding and seeing the things behind the 'frenzied appearance' is indeed the first step towards a healthier, more resilient community.
