🫡THROWBACK: In 2012, BitInstant booth gave away 100 BTC.
In 2012, at one of the earliest Bitcoin conferences in San Jose, California, crypto startup BitInstant (co-founded by Charlie Shrem) set up a booth to promote Bitcoin. To encourage adoption, they gave away 100 BTC to attendees — for free.
At the time, Bitcoin was worth just around $10, so the total value of the giveaway was about $1,000. Most people didn’t think much of it. Some lost the paper wallets. Others forgot they ever had them.
Fast forward to 2025:
100 BTC = $10.5 million+
It’s one of the most legendary early crypto giveaways — a reminder of how early believers (or lucky attendees) were massively rewarded.
While BitInstant later shut down and Shrem faced legal troubles, that giveaway remains a historic moment in Bitcoin lore. What seemed like a small gesture became a potential life-changing fortune for anyone who held on.
