The world’s two largest economies remain locked in high-stakes negotiations aimed at de-escalating a trade war triggered by the U.S. imposing 145% tariffs on Chinese imports in April 2025. In response, China slapped 125% retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.

Talks held in Geneva, Switzerland, recently produced a 90-day truce, with both sides agreeing to temporarily roll back tariffs to allow room for further dialogue. However, momentum has slowed, as deeper structural issues—including trade imbalances, tech restrictions, and national security concerns—continue to hinder lasting progress.
