The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has updated the projected release date of Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, who is serving a 25-year sentence for $11 billion in fraud. According to BOP data as of May 26, 2025, Bankman-Fried may be released on December 14, 2044 — four years earlier than anticipated. This is possible thanks to the good behavior time reduction system: federal inmates can earn up to 54 days of reduction each year. Time is also reduced for participation in educational and rehabilitation programs.

Bankman-Fried, who was convicted in 2024, is currently incarcerated at FCI Terminal Island in California, where he was transferred after difficult conditions in Brooklyn and a brief stay in Victorville, known for its harshness. Conditions at Terminal Island are considered more comfortable, which may facilitate his participation in sentence reduction programs.

Moreover, there are rumors about a possible pardon from Donald Trump, although there is no support for Bankman-Fried from the crypto community. His actions, particularly the unauthorized interview with Tucker Carlson in March 2025, sparked controversy and even temporary solitary confinement. Whether he will seize the opportunity for early release depends on his behavior and the decisions of the BOP.
