Blockchain is facing a scalability problem: the more transactions there are, the slower and more expensive they become. Layer 2 solutions are built on top of the main blockchain (Layer 1) to increase speed and reduce fees. Examples: Rollups, state channels. They allow for more transactions without overloading the main blockchain.
