The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit to seize over 24 million USD in cryptocurrency from Rustam Gallyamov, a Russian citizen accused of being behind the Qakbot malware. Gallyamov is believed to have operated Qakbot since 2008, infecting thousands of computers and selling access to cybercriminal groups deploying ransomware such as REvil, Conti, and Black Basta. Although the Qakbot network was dismantled in 2023, Gallyamov continues to operate. Authorities have seized over 170 Bitcoin along with 4 million USD in stablecoins from him. The DOJ asserts it will use all legal tools to prosecute cybercriminals and recover assets to compensate victims.
