Putin Overhauls Military Leadership: General Salyukov Named Deputy Security Council Secretary

In a major shake-up of Russia’s military hierarchy, President Vladimir Putin has removed General Oleg Salyukov from his post as Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces and appointed him as Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council.

Salyukov, who had held the top Ground Forces position since 2014, assumes the influential civilian role just ahead of his 70th birthday—the age limit for active military service in Russia. The Kremlin did not offer a specific explanation for the timing of the transition.

Replacing him is Colonel General Andrey Mordvichev, a senior military figure noted for his command role in Russia’s ongoing operations in Ukraine.

The leadership changes reflect a broader restructuring of the country’s defense leadership under Putin’s direction.
