According to Deep Tide TechFlow news on May 15, Fortune magazine reported that Coinbase recently disclosed a significant data breach incident, where criminals bribed Indian customer service personnel to obtain part of the user data, including sensitive information such as addresses, phone numbers, identification documents, and bank records. Approximately 84,000 users were affected, accounting for less than 1% of monthly active trading users.
The criminals then extorted $20 million in Bitcoin from Coinbase and used the stolen data to carry out social engineering scams. In response, Coinbase clearly stated it would refuse to pay the ransom and instead announced a $20 million reward for whistleblowers who could provide effective leads to assist in capturing the criminals, and promised to compensate all defrauded customers for their losses.
Currently, Coinbase has collaborated with U.S. and international law enforcement agencies to investigate this case.
