$TRUMP Considers Lowering China Tariffs to 80% Ahead of Crucial Trade Talks
Former U.S. President Donald TRUMP has indicated he may reduce tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 80%, signaling a potential softening of his trade stance. The announcement comes just before high-level talks between U.S. and Chinese negotiators set to take place in Geneva this weekend.
An 80% tariff, while still steep, would be a notable decrease and could signal efforts to ease ongoing tensions. Trump mentioned the proposed figure on social media, suggesting the final call could lie with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The existing tariffs have significantly impacted trade. Chinese exports to the U.S. dropped 21% in April compared to last year, highlighting the pressure on both economies. Many companies have said that tariffs above 50% make exporting to the U.S. financially unviable.
While the Trump administration has made progress with other nations—recently noting a preliminary deal with the UK—its standoff with China remains unresolved. The Geneva meetings will include senior officials from both sides, aiming to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for a broader trade agreement.
Though Trump’s openness to lower tariffs has boosted U.S. markets temporarily, it’s unclear whether 80% is low enough to revive stalled trade. Businesses reliant on Chinese supply chains continue to face uncertainty heading into the summer.
