On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, he becomes the first U.S.-born pontiff in history. A former missionary and bishop in Peru, Leo XIV is known for his deep commitment to social justice and workers' rights. His election follows the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. Seen as a continuation of Francis’ progressive vision, Leo XIV greeted the world with "Peace be with all of you!" His first public Mass is set for May 9, with his first Angelus on May 11.
