The 80% Value Area Strategy is a trading method based on Market Profile (a charting technique developed by J. Peter Steidlmayer) that helps traders identify high-probability setups when price enters the value area. Here’s the breakdown: 🔑 Key Concepts Value Area (VA): The price range where 70% of trading volume (sometimes 68% or 70%) occurred during a session. VAH (Value Area High): The upper boundary. VAL (Value Area Low): The lower boundary. POC (Point of Control): The price level with the highest traded volume. 📌 The 80% Rule The "80% Value Area Strategy" states: If the market opens outside the value area, but later in the session price enters and holds inside the value area for two consecutive 30-minute periods (TPOs), then there is an 80% probability that price will traverse the entire value area (from VAH to VAL, or vice versa). ✅ Trade Setup Identify the value area from the previous session. Mark VAH, VAL, POC. Check market open: If price opens outside VA, watch for re-entry. Entry condition: If price enters VA and stays inside for 2 consecutive 30-min periods, enter a trade towards the opposite side of the VA. Target: The opposite boundary of the VA (VAH → VAL or VAL → VAH). Stop-loss: Just outside the value area boundary where you entered. 📊 Example Yesterday’s Value Area: 4200 – 4250 (VA), with POC at 4225. Today, market opens at 4270 (above VAH). Price falls and enters VA (below 4250), stays inside for 2 TPOs (1 hour). Trade: Short at 4245. Target: VAL (4200).
