A nearly $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot has finally been claimed, with winning tickets sold in Texas and Missouri, lottery officials announced. 💰🎫
The $1.787 billion prize, the second largest in Powerball history, will be split between the two winners. Each has the option of taking an annuitized payout of $893.5 million spread over 30 payments or a lump sum of $410.3 million.
In Texas, the winning ticket was purchased at Big's 103, a gas station convenience store in Fredericksburg. Store manager Melanie Carter said the news came as a shock since the shop is fairly new. "We never would have expected it to be us," she said, adding she hopes the winner is a local in need. The store will receive a $250,000 bonus for selling the ticket.
Residents in nearby Kerrville, a community recently devastated by deadly flooding, said they hope the massive prize will benefit someone close to home. "We need all the help we can get over there," said local resident Carson McCoy.
Officials have not yet revealed where in Missouri the second winning ticket was sold, nor the identities of either winner.
The winning numbers were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and Powerball 17. The only jackpot larger than this was the $2.04 billion won in California in 2022.
