The head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who recently took office, Paul Atkins, has called for a comprehensive review of the agency's regulatory framework in the field of cryptocurrencies. He stated that outdated rules and the department's strict policies have stifled innovation for many years.
Speaking at the third roundtable of the SEC's cryptocurrency working group, Atkins said that the current regulatory environment "urgently needs attention".
Atkins also criticized the actions of his predecessor Gary Gensler, under whose leadership the agency adhered to an aggressive approach of "regulation by enforcement".
The chairman stated that his main priorities as the 34th head of the agency will be to facilitate capital formation, support fair and orderly markets, and protect investors. Additionally, he will do everything possible to ensure that the U.S. remains "the best and safest place for investment and entrepreneurship".
