Shocking theft case: Legendary country music widow tricked out of over 10 million USD in Crypto
A man
#Tennessee named Kirk West (58 years old) was recently arrested at Nashville airport, accused of stealing over 10 million USD in cryptocurrency and cash from Nancy Jones, the widow of country music legend George Jones.
The elaborate scheme and the lost assets
According to reports, Nancy Jones reported on July 23 that West had stolen 400,000 USD in cash and a cold Ledger wallet containing over 11 million USD in cryptocurrency (mainly
$XRP ) from two safes in her home around June 26. The total value of the cryptocurrency skyrocketed to over 17 million USD by the time West was arrested.
Nancy's legal team recovered about 5 million XRP, but nearly half a million XRP (worth about 1.5 million USD) is still missing.
Interestingly, West had been living with Nancy since 2013, after pretending to be a real estate buyer to approach wealthy women. The couple began a romantic relationship, and Nancy covered all living expenses for West, who was unemployed and had no assets.
West was previously convicted of bank fraud in 2016. While under home confinement, West learned about crypto and convinced Nancy to invest heavily in XRP, Ethereum,
$SHIB , and
$DOGE . When Nancy suspected West was deceiving her, she checked the safes and discovered the cold wallet and cash were missing. West was kicked out of the house and threatened over the phone that Nancy would only get back 5 million USD.
West was arrested while trying to move. He must post 1 million USD bail and faces charges of theft over 250,000 USD.
