Chinese Authorities Sound Alarm on Iris Data Collection Linked to Crypto

#Security (
#MSS ) has issued a stern warning about the national security risks posed by foreign companies collecting biometric iris data from users in exchange for cryptocurrency. The official notice, published on Wednesday via the MSS’s verified WeChat account, expresses concern over widespread exploitation of crypto incentives to collect sensitive personal information on a global scale.
Although the post refrains from naming the entity directly, analysts widely believe the statement refers to
#Worldcoin , the controversial identity-focused crypto project co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, now operating under the name World.
“Crypto for Iris Scans” Triggers National Security Red Flags in China
According to the MSS, certain overseas organizations are luring users with token distributions in return for scanning their irises. Chinese authorities argue that the practice not only violates individual privacy but also represents a significant national security risk due to the cross-border transmission of biometric data.
“These activities have serious implications for personal data protection and could be weaponized against national interests,” the ministry noted in its post.
