$COAI says India’s telecom growth now depends on two big drivers: AI and 6G. The group notes that the country’s network is expanding fast, with more than 4.6 lakh 5G sites already active. They also expect the 5G user base to rise sharply by 2026. The “Bharat 6G Vision” is also gaining pace, and COAI believes India could secure up to 10 percent of global 6G patents.
Even with this progress, telecom companies are still struggling to make real money from 5G. COAI points to a large gap between what telcos are spending on their networks and the revenue they earn. They estimate a shortfall of over ₹10,000 crore. COAI also says future 6G networks will likely need AI to make these new systems easier to use and more profitable.
On the policy side, COAI is against giving spectrum directly to private companies for their own 5G networks. They say this could create security risks and damage the market balance. They also want OTT apps like WhatsApp and Telegram to follow telecom rules for ID checks and data safety. COAI has also raised concerns about new service-quality rules, calling them too heavy for telcos to follow.
A long-running issue continues: big online platforms create huge network traffic, but telcos pay the full cost to maintain the system. COAI says this model is unfair and wants a new cost-sharing setup so both sides support the infrastructure. They also warn that rising customs duties on key network equipment are making upgrades more expensive.
