BBB 25 contestant involved in R$$ 12 billion scam involving cryptocurrency pyramid scheme.
Marcelo Prata, a BBB 25 contestant, was the leader of Unick Forex, a financial pyramid scheme that defrauded 1.5 million people of R$$ 12 billion. The company, founded by Leidimar Bernardo Lopes, promised returns of up to 33% per month in cryptocurrencies and forex. Prata denies involvement and claims to be a victim.
In 2018, the CVM identified Unick Forex as an illegal financial pyramid scheme, offering securities without authorization. Despite the warning, the leaders continued to operate. In 2019, an administrative proceeding resulted in fines of R$$ 12 million. The PF's Lamanai Operation dismantled the scheme, indicting 15 people for financial crimes.
The Prata brothers, regional leaders, were not punished due to the lack of specific legislation at the time. However, experts say they may be held liable under the Consumer Protection Code.
The scheme moved R$$ 28 billion illegally, causing losses of R$$ 12 billion to 1.5 million people. #BBB
