zkBTC Bridge Launches on Mainnet, Enabling Secure BTC to ETH Transfers

  • zkBTC Bridge enables BTC holders to participate in Ethereum DeFi ecosystems through secure, trustless cross-chain transfers.

  • The protocol uses zero-knowledge proofs for verification, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring decentralized control over asset movement.

  • Lightec is advancing ZenKeeper and OPZKP, aiming to strengthen Bitcoin's integration with scalable and secure blockchain technologies.

Lightec has officially launched its zkBTC Bridge on the Ethereum mainnet. The launch comes after over two years of development, including a structured testnet phase that ended on July 1. During the testnet, users earned zkBTC points through active participation, building on earlier campaigns like Beta V3 Odyssey, which started in December last year.

The zkBTC Bridge is designed to allow Bitcoin holders to access decentralized finance on Ethereum. It enables secure transfers of BTC without centralized intermediaries. Users can deposit BTC into a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP)-managed Bitcoin address. Once confirmed on the Bitcoin blockchain, a proof is created off-chain and verified by a smart contract on Ethereum. The contract then mints zkBTC, a token pegged 1:1 with BTC.

Fully decentralized with integrated DeFi access

The bridge uses trusted multisignature custody for added security and operates with low fees. Its interface aims to simplify user interaction. Additionally, zkBTC is compatible with DeFi platforms, expanding the utility for Bitcoin within the Ethereum ecosystem. The infrastructure supporting the bridge involves collaborations with multiple blockchain service providers.

Lightec is now developing ZenKeeper, a protocol intended to remove off-chain verification during BTC issuance using zero-knowledge proofs. The company is also progressing on OPZKP, a Bitcoin-native Layer 2 protocol that uses the OP_ZKP opcode. This initiative aims to improve network scalability and security with native Bitcoin compatibility.

Bridge sets new standard for zero-knowledge interoperability

According to the development team, the zkBTC Bridge is the first bridge between Bitcoin and Ethereum to rely entirely on zero-knowledge proofs. It supports both minting and redemption of zkBTC, allowing users to move their BTC in and out of the Ethereum network securely and at any time.
