Today Iran is building exactly the same strategy.

In 2002, during the Millennium Challenge 2002 war game, retired Marine General Paul Van Riper was put in charge of the opposing force - a stand‑in for Iran.

In the simulation, in just minutes, his asymmetric tactics overwhelmed the US side.

16 US warships were sunk, including an aircraft carrier, and an equivalent of around 20,000 troops “killed.”

The exercise was immediately halted.
The fleet was “refloated”, the simulation reset, and Van Riper was forbidden from using the tactics that had just won.
In protest, he walked out of the exercise, saying it had become propaganda.

Today Iran is applying the same asymmetric doctrine it simulated back then - exploiting geography, swarming small craft, mines, missiles, and unmanned systems - especially around the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

The lesson was shown more than 20 years ago.
