1ST READING: Acts 20:28-38
In those days: Paul said to the elders of the Church of Ephesus, "Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you guardians, to feed the church of the Lord which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore, be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive." And when he had spoken thus, he knelt and prayed with them all. And they all wept and embraced Paul and kissed him, sorrowing most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they should see his face no more. And they brought him to the ship.

I have given them your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not pray that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth."

Reflection:
At the "farewell" supper with His disciples, Jesus prays to His Father to keep them safe from the attacks of the evil one. Similarly, in His farewell speech to the elders of the Church in Ephesus, Paul warns them against the "savage wolves" that will attack the Christians (Acts 20:29). Also, he warns them against attacks from within their own ranks (Acts 20:30). The evil one continues to attack the Church from outside and within. For instance, he attacks by persecution from outside, or by introducing into society values (e.g., same-sex marriages) contrary to the GOSPEL. From within the Church, for instance, he sows seeds of disunity, corruption, immorality, etc. May the grace of Jesus keep us safe from all such attacks! Jesus, I trust in you.

1ST READING: Acts 19:1-8
While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have never even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve of them in all. And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the kingdom of God.

Reflection:
In times of trouble and difficulty, it is very hard to know God. But for us in Christ, "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him." Jesus tells His disciples that troubles will come, but that their peace should be in Him. Peace isn't the absence of trouble, but the presence of God even in our troubles. It is that confidence that God is still in control. We sometimes think that peace comes from knowing the right things, but instead it comes from knowing the right Person. Knowing Jesus and trusting Him will give us that peace which the world cannot give. Jesus, I trust in you.

*The words of the Popes:*
*“Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you” (Jn 17:1). The glorification that Jesus asks for himself as High Priest, is the entry into full obedience to the Father, an obedience that leads to his fullest filial condition: “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made” (Jn 17:5). This readiness and this request are the first act of the new priesthood of Jesus, which is a total gift of himself on the Cross and on the Cross itself — the supreme act of love — he is glorified because love is the true glory, the divine glory. The second moment of this prayer is the intercession that Jesus makes for the disciples who have been with him. They are those of whom Jesus can say to the Father: “I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word” (Jn 17:6). This “manifesting God’s name to m en” is the fulfilment of a new presence of the Father among the people, for humanity. This “manifesting” is not only a word, but is reality in Jesus; God is with us, and so his name — his presence with us, his being one of us — is “fulfilled”. This manifestation is thus realized in the Incarnation of the Word. In Jesus God enters human flesh, he becomes close in a new and unique way. And this presence culminates in the sacrifice that Jesus makes in his Pasch o
f death and Resurrection. Jesus, I trust in you.*

في تلك الأيام: انضمت حشود الفيلبيين للهجوم على بولس وسيلا؛ ومزق القضاة ملابسهم وأصدروا أوامر بضربهم بالعصي. وعندما ألحقوا بهم ضربات كثيرة، ألقوا بهم في السجن، متهمين السجان بالحفاظ عليهم بأمان. بعد أن تلقى هذا الأمر، وضعهم في السجن الداخلي وأوثق أقدامهم في الأصفاد. لكن حوالي منتصف الليل كان بولس وسيلا يصلّيان ويغنّيان ترانيم لله، وكان المسجونون يستمعون إليهما، وفجأة حدث زلزال عظيم، فتزعزعت أساسات السجن؛ وفتحت جميع الأبواب على الفور وتحررت سلاسل الجميع. عندما استيقظ السجان ورأى أن أبواب السجن مفتوحة، استل سيفه وكان على وشك أن يقتل نفسه، معتقداً أن السجناء قد هربوا. لكن بولس صرخ بصوت عالٍ، "لا تؤذِ نفسك، فنحن هنا جميعاً." واستدعى الأنوار واندفع إلى الداخل، ومرتجفاً من الخوف سقط أمام بولس وسيلا، وأخرجهم وقال، "يا رجال، ماذا يجب أن أفعل لأخلص؟" فقالوا، "آمن بالرب يسوع، وستخلص، أنت وأهل بيتك." وتحدثوا بكلمة الرب له ولكل الذين كانوا في بيته. وأخذهم في نفس الساعة من الليل، وغسل جراحهم، واعتمد في الحال، مع كل عائلته. ثم أحضرهم إلى بيته، وأعد لهم الطعام؛ وتهلل مع كل عائلته لأنه آمن بالله.

القراءة الأولى: أعمال 16:11-15
انطلقنا من ترواد، وقمنا برحلة مباشرة إلى ساموثراكي، وفي اليوم التالي إلى نيبوليس، ومن هناك إلى فيلبي، التي تُعتبر المدينة الرائدة في منطقة مقدونيا، وهي مستعمرة رومانية. بقينا في هذه المدينة عدة أيام، وفي يوم السبت، خرجنا من البوابة إلى جانب النهر، حيث افترضنا أنه يوجد مكان للصلاة؛ وجلسنا وتحدثنا إلى النساء اللواتي اجتمعن. وكانت واحدة ممن سمعنا امرأة تُدعى ليديا، من مدينة ثيارة، بائعة للسلع الأرجوانية، وكانت تعبد الله. ففتح الرب قلبها للاستماع لما قيل من قبل بولس. وعندما اعتمدت هي وأهلها، توسلت إلينا قائلة: "إذا حكمتم علي أنني أمينة للرب، تعالوا إلى بيتي وابقوا هنا." وقد ألحّت علينا.

في تلك الأيام: جاء بولس إلى دربة وليسترا. كان هناك تلميذ اسمه تيموثاوس، ابن امرأة يهودية كانت مؤمنة، لكن والده كان يونانيًا. كان يُشاد به من الإخوة في ليسترا وإيكونيا. أراد بولس أن يرافقه تيموثاوس؛ فأخذه وختنه بسبب اليهود الذين كانوا في تلك الأماكن، لأنهم كانوا يعرفون أن والده كان يونانيًا. بينما كانوا في طريقهم عبر المدن، سلموا لهم لمراقبة القرارات التي اتخذها الرسل والشيوخ الذين كانوا في أورشليم. فتعززت الكنائس في الإيمان، وزادت أعدادهم يوميًا. ومروا عبر منطقة فريجيا وغلاطية، بعدما مُنعهم الروح القدس من التحدث بالكلمة في آسيا. وعندما جاءوا مقابل ميسيا، حاولوا الذهاب إلى بيثينية، لكن روح يسوع لم يسمح لهم؛ لذا، بعد أن مروا بميسيا، نزلوا إلى ترواس. وظهرت رؤية لبولس في الليل: كان هناك رجل من مقدونيا يقف ويتوسل إليه قائلاً: "تعال إلى مقدونيا وساعدنا." وعندما رأى الرؤية، سعينا على الفور للدخول إلى مقدونيا، مستنتجين أن الله قد دعانا لنبشر الإنجيل لهم.

في تلك الأيام: بدا جيدًا للرُسل والشيوخ، مع الكنيسة كلها، اختيار رجال من بينهم وإرسالهم إلى أنطاكية مع بولس وبرنابا. أرسلوا يهوذا المدعو بارسابا، وسيلا، وهما من الرجال البارزين بين الإخوة، مع الرسالة التالية: "الإخوة، سواءً الرُسل أو الشيوخ، إلى الإخوة الذين من الأمم في أنطاكية وسوريا وكيليكية، تحية. حيث سمعنا أن بعضهم خرجوا منا بدون إذننا وأزعجوا أذهانكم بما قالوا. لذلك اتفقنا جميعًا على اختيار بعض الرجال وإرسالهم إليكم مع أصدقائنا الأعزاء برنابا وبولس - رجال خاطروا بحياتهم من أجل اسم ربنا يسوع المسيح. لذا أرسلنا يهوذا وسيلا، اللذان سيخبرانكم بنفس الأمور شفهيًا. لأنه بدا جيدًا للروح القدس ولنا ألا نضع عليكم عبئًا أكبر من هذه الأمور الضرورية: أن تمتنعوا عما ذُبح للأصنام ومن الدم ومن ما خُنق ومن الزنا. إذا حفظتم أنفسكم من هذه، فستفعلون خيرًا. وداعًا." فلما أُرسلوا، نزلوا إلى أنطاكية؛ وبعد أن جمعوا الجماعة معًا، سلموا الرسالة. وعندما قرأوها، فرحوا بالتشجيع.

القراءة الأولى: أعمال 15: 7-21
في تلك الأيام: بعد أن كان هناك الكثير من النقاش، قام بطرس وقال للرُسُل والشيوخ، "إخوتي، أنتم تعرفون أنه في الأيام الأولى اختاركم الله، حتى يسمع الأمم بكلام الإنجيل ويؤمنوا. والله، الذي يعرف القلوب، شهد لهم، معطيًا إياهم الروح القدس كما أعطانا؛ ولم يُميز بينهم وبيننا، بل طهر قلوبهم بالإيمان. إذن، لماذا تجربون الله بوضع نير على أعناق التلاميذ، وهو نير لم يستطع آباؤنا ولا نحن احتماله؟ لكننا نؤمن أننا سنخلص بنعمة الرب يسوع، كما سيفعلون." وظلت الجمعية صامتة؛ واستمعوا إلى برنابا وبولس وهما يرويان ما الأيات والعجائب التي فعلها الله من خلالهم بين الأمم. بعد أن انتهوا من الكلام، أجاب يعقوب، "إخوتي، استمعوا إلي. قد روى سمعان كيف زار الله الأمم أولاً، ليأخذ من بينهم شعبًا لاسمه. ومع هذا تتفق كلمات الأنبياء، كما هو مكتوب، 'بعد هذا سأرجع، وسأعيد بناء مسكن داود الذي سقط؛ سأعيد بناء خرابه، وسأقيمه، لكي يطلب بقية الناس الرب، وجميع الأمم المدعوين باسمي، يقول الرب، الذي قد عرف هذه الأمور من قديم. لذلك، أرى أنه ينبغي علينا ألا نثقل كاهل أولئك من الأمم الذين يتوجهون إلى الله، بل يجب أن نكتب إليهم ليمتنعوا عن نجاسات الأصنام وعن الزنا وعن ما هو مخنوق ومن الدم. من الأجيال المبكرة، كان لموسى في كل مدينة من يكرز به، لأنه يُقرأ كل سبت في المجامع."

القراءة الأولى: أعمال الرسل 14:19-28
في تلك الأيام: جاء اليهود [إلى لسترة] من أنطاكية وإيقونية؛ وبعد أن أقنعوا الناس، رجموا بولس وسحبوه خارج المدينة، معتقدين أنه كان ميتاً. ولكن عندما اجتمع التلاميذ حوله، قام ودخل المدينة؛ وفي اليوم التالي، تابع مع برنابا إلى ديربي. وعندما بشروا بالإنجيل في تلك المدينة وصنعوا العديد من التلاميذ، عادوا إلى لسترة وإيقونية وأنطاكية، يقوّون نفوس التلاميذ، ويحثّونهم على الاستمرار في الإيمان، ويقولون إنه من خلال العديد من الضيقات يجب أن ندخل ملكوت الله. وعندما عيّنوا شيوخاً لهم في كل كنيسة، بالصلاة والصوم، سلموهم إلى الرب الذي آمنوا به. ثم مروا عبر بيسيدية وجاءوا إلى بامفيليا. وعندما تكلموا بالكلمة في بيرجا، نزلوا إلى أتاليا؛ ومن هناك أبحروا إلى أنطاكية، حيث كانوا قد أوصوا بنعمة الله من أجل العمل الذي أكملوه. وعندما وصلوا، اجتمعوا بالكنيسة وأخبروا بكل ما فعله الله معهم، وكيف فتح باب الإيمان للأمم. وظلوا مع التلاميذ لفترة ليست بالقليلة.
