I used to think the biggest Problem in Bitcoin DeFi was wrapping BTC. Now I'm not so sure. Almost every Bitcoin DeFi design asks users to trust something beyond Bitcoin itself. A wrapper, a custodian, or a bridge quietly becomes part of the security model.
The asset is still called Bitcoin, but the trust assumptions have already changed. That's why BABE caught my attention. Not because it gives Bitcoin smart contracts, but because it tackles a smaller and arguably more important problem: making proof Verification cheap enough that external Systems can prove claims back to Bitcoin. Instead of moving BTC to DeFi, the goal is to make DeFi earn Bitcoin's trust. But here's what I keep questioning. Lower verification costs don't automatically create a trustless system.
Failures rarely happen because proofs are too expensive. They happen when assumptions break, Coordinators disappear, liquidity stalls, timeout paths get triggered, or users have no idea what happens next. For me, the real challenge is not just cheaper verification. It's building systems where recovery is as predictable as Success.
Cryptography can secure the happy path, but adoption depends on how confidently people can navigate the unhappy one. Maybe the future of Bitcoin DeFi won't be defined by the next bridge. Maybe it'll be defined by how easy it is to verify trust and how hard it is for trust to quietly disappear.
