However, over time, the second-largest cryptocurrency has consistently been stuck in the US$3,000–US$4,000 range. Ethereum’s market value, which is often praised for its advanced technology, remains at US$414.2 billion, far above USDT Tether’s market capitalization of US$183.4 billion. However, the token has recently slumped, dropping more than 12.7% in a week, following the overall crypto market downturn as Bitcoin plunged to US$99,000. Ethereum has also seen a significant decline against Bitcoin, falling over 80% since its 2021 peak, sparking pessimism and a wave of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) in the market. Several factors have made ETH appear stagnant — such as the side effects of the Dencun upgrade, which reduced transaction fees and ETH burning, the weak performance of spot Ethereum ETFs compared to Bitcoin, and large-scale selling by whales. In addition, the dominance of staking by a few large addresses has raised concerns about centralization. Upcoming upgrades like PECTRA and EIP-7762 are expected to further reduce ETH burning, diminishing the appeal of its “ultrasonic money” narrative. Satoshi Refuses Comparison to Fiat, Says Bitcoin Is Impossible to Experience Inflation Satoshi Nakamoto asserted that Bitcoin could never experience inflation like fiat currencies, following criticism claiming that its system would be affected by the ever-increasing speed of computers. He made this statement in an email dated November 8, 2008, in response to allegations that Bitcoin would experience 35% annual inflation. In his explanation, he emphasized that Bitcoin’s proof-of-work system was designed so that mining difficulty continuously adjusts. If the network’s computing power increases, the difficulty level automatically rises, keeping the number of blocks generated per hour stable. This means that even as technology advances, Bitcoin’s production remains controlled and does not surge uncontrollably. Satoshi also stressed that the number of Bitcoins created each year has been predetermined far in advance, as its issuance rate is designed to remain constant until it reaches the maximum limit of 21 million coins. He explained that an increase in the number of Bitcoins does not automatically cause inflation unless supply grows faster than the number of users.
