The relentless growth of data stored on a blockchain can slow down node synchronization, increase hardware requirements, and centralize network participation. For a high-throughput chain like Somnia, where every validator in its Multistream Consensus model publishes an independent data chain, this challenge is amplified. Somnia's approach to this problem is multi-faceted, focusing on efficient state management rather than mere data accumulation. The protocol does not mandate that every validator node retains the complete historical data of all other data chains indefinitely. Instead, the system is designed with a clear separation of roles. The primary responsibility of a validator is to produce blocks on their own data chain and participate in the consensus chain. For long-term data availability and archival purposes, Somnia leverages a subset of specialized nodes or external data storage solutions. This design ensures that the operational requirements for validators remain manageable, preventing state bloat from becoming a barrier to running a node. Furthermore, the IceDB database is not just fast; it is engineered for efficient state pruning and garbage collection. The protocol can define rules for discarding obsolete state data that is no longer necessary for network consensus and operation, while cryptographically securing the historical record.
