#VietnamPlansFirstCryptoLicensesIn2026

What's the news?

Vietnam plans to issue its first crypto asset service provider licenses in 2026 under a pilot legal framework, letting the first digital asset platforms start operating. The update came out of a meeting in Vienna between Vietnam's finance officials and Austria's financial regulator, where they discussed how to supervise the market.

What will the rules focus on?

Vietnam's securities regulator says the system will cover both service providers and investor transactions, with a focus on risk management, protecting investor assets and stopping money laundering. In simple words: Vietnam wants crypto to be safer and more transparent.

How did we get here?

Vietnam's five-year crypto market pilot started in September 2025.

The Finance Ministry began accepting license applications on January 20, 2026.

Five Vietnamese companies reportedly passed the first screening stage, including affiliates of Techcombank, VPBank and LPBank, plus VIX Securities and Sun Group.

The rules are strict

Only companies incorporated in Vietnam can apply, and foreign exchanges must partner with local firms. Operators need about 10 trillion Vietnamese dong (roughly $400 million) in capital, and local entities must hold at least 65% of the ownership. This means only big, well-backed players will get in.

Why does it matter?

One goal is to move trading away from offshore platforms and into a regulated local market. Vietnam is already one of the world's most active crypto markets by number of investors. Clear rules could mean better protection for users.

Keep it in perspective

Licenses are planned, not yet issued. Earlier reports pointed to a launch as early as the third quarter of 2026, so timelines can shift. Watch for the first approved names and a confirmed launch date.
