Look, OpenGradient says it's solving AI centralization by building a decentralized network for hosting, running, and verifying models.
Sounds reasonable.
But I've seen this movie before.
The core problem is real. A handful of companies control most advanced AI infrastructure. The proposed solution? Add another network, another token, another verification layer, and another set of incentives.
That's where things get messy.
Let's be honest. Most developers don't care whether infrastructure is decentralized. They care whether it's cheaper, faster, and more reliable. Verification sounds great until somebody has to pay for the extra complexity.
And here's the catch. Decentralized AI still needs compute. Compute naturally concentrates around whoever has the most hardware, capital, and operational expertise. So the question isn't whether OpenGradient can build the network.
It's whether a decentralized AI network eventually ends up depending on a small group of powerful operators anyway.
Different architecture. Same gravity.

But let's be honest. Their solution adds an entirely new layer of coordination, verification, incentives, and token economics on top of an already complex system. It sounds cleaner in a pitch deck than it does in production.
I've seen this movie before. Decentralization promises openness, then a handful of large operators end up controlling most of the network anyway because they have the capital, hardware, and scale advantages.
Then there's the incentive question. Who benefits if adoption grows? Users might get cheaper access. Or maybe token holders, early backers, and infrastructure operators capture most of the upside.
Verification sounds great too. Until you realize verification isn't free. Every extra layer of trust introduces extra costs, overhead, and complexity somewhere in the system.
And when something breaks, who is responsible? A centralized provider has support teams and accountability. A decentralized network often has a much fuzzier answer.
