#SECCrypto #SECCryptoRountable The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) held its first cryptocurrency roundtable on March 21, 2025, marking a milestone in the regulation of digital assets. The event brought together legal experts, former officials, and industry representatives to discuss regulatory approaches that balance innovation and investor protection. During the session, Miles Jennings, general counsel of a16z Crypto, criticized the SEC's previous strategy, stating that it failed to protect investors or foster efficient markets. Jennings emphasized the need for a more effective regulatory approach that supports the sector's sustainable growth. On the other hand, John Reed Stark, former director of the SEC's Office of Internet Enforcement, opposed amending existing securities laws to accommodate cryptocurrencies. Stark argued that digital assets must comply with current regulations to ensure investor protection. Commissioner Hester Peirce, leader of the SEC's Cryptoasset Working Group, emphasized that this initiative represents a "reconfiguration" of the regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies. The goal is to develop a framework that promotes innovation without compromising investor security. This roundtable is the first in a series of events planned by the SEC to address regulatory uncertainties in the cryptocurrency market. The initiative seeks to establish clear guidelines that facilitate responsible industry growth and protect market participants. The crypto community and regulators hope that these discussions will lead to balanced policies that foster innovation and safeguard investor interests. Disclaimer: Includes third-party opinions.
