In an intriguing study, a Ben-Gurion University of the Negev cybersecurity researcher who analyzes fraud on social networks joined forces with a team of BGU biologists to develop a machine-learning system to recognize abnormal activity in protein networks inside the human body.

Their innovative method, weighted graph anomalous node detection (WGAND), uses an algorithm that uncovers suspicious behavior in social networks such as LinkedIn or Instagram to discover anomalous behavior in networks of proteins inside cells.

The researchers said WGAND enabled them to identify proteins associated with brain disorders and heart conditions, as well as those involved in critical biological processes, like neuron signaling in the brain and muscle contraction in the heart.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was visiting China on Wednesday for consultations ahead of a new round of nuclear talks with the United States.

Iran and the United States are set to meet in Oman on Saturday for a third set of talks on the Iranian nuclear issue, with Araghchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff leading the negotiations.

A technical meeting between nuclear experts from the two countries will also be held on Saturday in the Omani capital, Muscat.

“It is necessary for us to keep our friends in China informed of developments and to consult with them,” Araghchi told Iranian state television.

China was a party to the 2015 nuclear agreement that reined in Tehran’s nuclear program, which was abandoned after US President Donald Trump withdrew from it three years later.

Huge crowds flock to Vatican for Pope Francis’s funeral

Tens of thousands of mourners are flooding into St. Peter’s Square for the funeral of Pope Francis, the champion of the poor and the Catholic Church’s first Latin American leader.

Some people waited overnight to be first in the queue for the ceremony, attended by world leaders including US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky — who may meet on the sidelines.

The Argentine pontiff, who died on Monday aged 88, sought to steer the centuries-old Church into a more inclusive direction during his 12-year papacy.

Some 250,000 people paid their respects before his coffin during its three days of lying in state at St Peter’s Basilica, and huge numbers gathered from dawn on Friday to attend his final send-off.

The ceremony is due to begin at 11 a.m. (Israel time) and is expected to draw some 200,000 people.

The United States and the European Union still need a lot of work to reach a deal that would prevent the imposition of tariffs on each other's goods, EU Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said on Friday.
