This is my story—someone with 13 years of experience trading WTI futures, a classic commodity, who entered the crypto futures market with great enthusiasm, only to struggle in the beginning.
The biggest difference between traditional futures and crypto futures is in their behavior. Crypto is highly volatile, but its trend lifespan is extremely short. If you apply the same indicators from traditional markets, you often need to increase the time frame by 3x to capture meaningful moves. When the trend gives you a profit window, you must act quickly. Delayed decisions often turn winners into losses.
Volatility is the most defining factor in crypto trading. It’s usually calculated using standard deviation in system trading. Large-cap assets often show volatility near 10, mid-caps around 20, and smaller or more volatile assets much higher. Intraday volatility shifts as volume surges, so you must adapt.
