🚫 Ross Ulbricht — the creator of the largest anonymous marketplace of his time, launched the project when Bitcoin was worth only $0.5. A student of physics and materials science, he forever etched his name in history... but at the cost of his freedom.
What is Silk Road?
Silk Road — an anonymous marketplace launched in 2011. The platform allowed free trade outside of government control and became a symbol of libertarianism and crypto-economics. At the peak of its activity, up to 18% of the world's drug trafficking and 90% of all Bitcoin transactions went through it.
Downfall:
In 2013, the FBI identified Silk Road users and arrested Ulbricht. They seized a laptop containing 144,336 Bitcoins, which were later sold for $48 million. In 2015, Ross received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Unexpected twist:
Despite the controversial reputation of the project, Ulbricht became a cult figure in the crypto community. Thousands signed petitions for his release, and at the end of his term, President Trump considered his pardon — but ultimately declined. Today, Ross is still serving his life sentence in federal prison.
