A few clicks on Grant Yun’s Instagram page and you’ll realize two things: first, Yun is a talented artist, and second, he’s a proud dachshund owner.

While his miniature dachshund Bumi knows him only as dog dad, the rest of the world knows him as the creative mind behind “Japan Life Edition,” a series that reflects Yun’s memories of childhood visits to Japan, where the young artist developed his storytelling insight through observing the increasingly modern landscape he describes.

Yun’s accolades are already there, as is his art, and his collectors agree: In April 2024, Yun re-released “Life in Japan” on Solana, which sold out in nine minutes.

A Bay Area native, Yun cites his Korean-American background and love of architecture as two of his biggest artistic inspirations. “Most of my artwork is centered around my childhood experiences, places I’ve visited, or places that inspire me,” he told Right Click to Save in September 2023. “My philosophy in life is to appreciate every moment, which probably comes from the fact that I believe a lot of artists are facing a perpetual existential crisis, especially in the 21st century.”

Despite feeling the strain of modern society, Yun said he tries not to take life for granted and to live in the present moment, building his artistic career on observing the world around him and inviting others to see what he sees.

Yun was born in California but was inspired by the Midwest

Although Yun was born and raised in California, the Midwest became his birthplace as an artist, and his “Midwest” series is based on his memories of moving from California to Wisconsin in 2014, and he writes that when he began the series in 2019, he “adopted a different perspective than before and used a whole new set of colors.”

The “Midwest” series also ties into his roots as a medical student — overlapping all the aspects of the job Yun describes as most important to him, “I want people living in Wisconsin to feel connected to their surroundings during their residency,” Yun shared to Right Click to Save.

His “Cow” became a case study in CC0 usage

CC0 is the abbreviation of Creative Commons Zero License, which simply translates to "no rights reserved". It allows anyone to create based on original art or content without worrying about copyright infringement.

Yun’s “Midwest” series, CoW, has a CC0 license and inspired excitement and creativity from other artists in the NFT space, with the grey, black and white cows set against a green pastel background, becoming the basis and inspiration for NFT holders who then went on to create derivative works of Yun’s work, which Yun celebrated on X (Twitter) multiple times.

His artistic style and creative process advocate simplicity

Whether it’s artwork or creative partnerships, Yun makes art the way he always has: using Adobe Illustrator on a Macbook Pro.

In one sense, he says, his work is like a puzzle, giving ordered meaning to simple vector shapes, but on a deeper level it tells the story of the transformations of modernity and the contrasting values that have emerged as a result.

In October 2023, Yun collaborated with 14 other NFT artists and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to showcase his artistic talents in a participatory art project.

The MoMA Postcard Exhibition, a virtual exhibition designed to encourage easy use and experimentation with web3 technologies, is now open to the public and allows anyone to start creating an idea on a blank virtual postcard, stamp it, and send it off to their next creative partner.

Regardless of Yun’s creative process, he speaks openly about his hard work and determination to pursue his goals, whether in the arts or medicine.

He wrote: “Before entering the web3 space and creating NFTs, I told myself that one day I would appear in auction houses, I would be a prolific artist, and my work would one day be in the permanent collection of a museum. Every day I woke up, I worked towards this goal, even though there was no clear trajectory. With the emergence of web3 art, the path became clearer.”
