Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt shocked the world with new predictions regarding artificial intelligence (AI). According to him, most people will lose their jobs 3–6 years after the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a system that will surpass the average human in reasoning. "A new, non-human intelligence is likely emerging with better reasoning capabilities than the average person. This is AGI—superintelligence. This will happen very quickly, and people are not ready," Schmidt said in a recent interview.
Experts from San Francisco working with Schmidt are confident that AGI will emerge in 2–4 years. This will lead to fundamental changes in society, the economy, and politics. Schmidt emphasizes that AI is already self-learning to plan and will soon no longer require human commands. "Computers are now self-improving... they are learning to plan," he said, warning of the emergence of artificial superintelligence (ASI) in six years, which will be smarter than the sum of all human brains.
Schmidt is not a pessimist: the history of automation shows that new jobs are created, albeit with higher salaries. However, this time everything is different because of the speed of change. He advises everyone—from artists to doctors—to immediately master AI, or they risk becoming unnecessary. "You won't lose your job because of AI, but you will lose it because of someone who uses AI," echoes his words in the warnings of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
This prediction underscores the global race: the U.S. leads in closed models, while China leads in open ones. Schmidt calls for investments in AI despite a lack of electricity. Society must prepare for "unpredictable" changes that will affect everything from democracy to national security. The future: more productivity but with the risk of mass unemployment if adaptation does not occur.
