According to reports from Wu, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions on 9 entities in Myanmar and 10 entities in Cambodia, accusing them of forcing trafficking victims into virtual currency investment fraud activities. These scam groups threaten victims through debt bondage, violence, and forced prostitution, compelling them to carry out online scams against strangers via instant messaging or text messages. The Treasury Department stated that last year Americans lost over $10 billion due to scams originating from Southeast Asia.
