The largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, Coinbase, is fully embracing artificial intelligence (AI). CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that currently over 40% of the platform's code is generated by AI, and he further announced the goal - to increase the proportion of code written by AI to 50% before October.
Brian Armstrong stated earlier today on the social media platform X that although AI-generated code still needs to undergo strict review and not all business scenarios can be directly applied, "we should use AI as broadly as possible and in a responsible manner."
~40% of daily code written at Coinbase is AI-generated. I want to get it to >50% by October.
Obviously it needs to be reviewed and understood, and not all areas of the business can use AI-generated code. But we should be using it responsibly as much as we possibly can. pic.twitter.com/Nmnsdxgosp

He also shared internal data showing that since April of this year, the number of lines of AI-generated code on the Coinbase platform has doubled.
However, the deepening penetration of AI has caused many to worry about job security in the future. (New York Post) even quoted an extreme prediction from a technology expert in Oklahoma, suggesting that by the year 2300, the wave of unemployment caused by AI could reduce the global population from 8 billion to 100 million.
Nonetheless, White House AI and cryptocurrency czar David Sacks, along with researchers from the Big Four accounting firms PwC, have criticized such 'apocalyptic' theories as overly exaggerated. They believe that AI will not cause the collapse of the labor market, but rather can significantly enhance employee productivity.
Coinbase's stance is clearly closer to the latter, as the company's engineers now widely use AI coding tools like Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor, significantly accelerating the development process.
Brian Armstrong stated: 'This has achieved tremendous success that was impossible a year ago, such as a single engineer being able to complete program restructuring, system upgrades, and even build new codebases from scratch within days, instead of the months traditionally required.'
Brian Armstrong recently admitted on the (Cheeky Pint) Podcast hosted by John Collison that he once asked engineers in the internal Slack channel to fully adopt AI tools. Engineers who refuse to use AI without providing a reasonable explanation are fired without hesitation.
Despite the significant increase in the proportion of AI-generated code, Coinbase continues to actively recruit. According to the company website, there are currently about 350 job openings, nearly half of which are in engineering and development, including numerous backend engineer positions explicitly labeled with AI in the job titles or descriptions (93 positions).
In addition to technical positions, customer experience is also a key recruitment focus, with 56 job openings currently available.
