The General Prosecutor's Office of Tajikistan reported that in the first half of 2025, illegal cryptocurrency mining caused damages of 32 million somoni (approximately $3.4 million) to the country's energy sector. Prosecutor General Habibullo Vohidzoda noted that numerous cases of electricity use for mining without proper accounting have been discovered. According to him, equipment for mining farms is being illegally imported into the country, leading to significant energy losses.
The prosecutor's office has initiated 4-5 criminal cases regarding the establishment and use of mining equipment. In the Sughd region, 135 units of equipment were found in residential buildings, causing damages amounting to 287,939 somoni. In total, over the past six months, 3,988 individuals have been held administratively accountable, and 38.7 million somoni ($4 million) has been returned to the budget due to electricity theft.
In Tajikistan, cryptocurrency mining is not regulated by legislation, but violations of electricity use rules are punishable by fines ranging from 27,000 to 90,000 somoni or imprisonment from 3 to 10 years. The prosecutor's office continues investigations, and the authorities are tightening control over energy consumption.
