Vitalik Buterin: Hybrid ZK Approach is the Key to Ethereum Layer 2 Evolution
Ethereum💥 co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared a forward-looking roadmap for Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) networks, emphasizing a strategic pivot in their evolution. With several major L2s now meeting the first stage of security standards, Buterin believes the next major milestone should focus on enabling fast native withdrawals through ZK (zero-knowledge) proof systems—a step he considers more urgent than progressing to stage two security.
To strike the right balance between security and speed, Buterin proposed a “2-of-3” hybrid proof system, combining ZK, OP (Optimistic proofs), and TEE (Trusted Execution Environments). This innovative framework aims to ensure robust validation while reducing latency in withdrawals.
As ZK technology matures and costs continue to decline, Buterin sees real potential for near-instant asset transfers and cross-L2 clearing on Layer 1 through aggregation technology. The long-term vision is an Ethereum ecosystem where L2s seamlessly interconnect with speed, efficiency, and trust—provided the economics remain sustainable.
🔗 A new phase of L2 infrastructure is dawning, and ETH remains at the heart of it.
