Midrash (Hebrew: מדרש, literally "study, interpretation") — in Judaism, it is the exposition or "exegesis" primarily of the Holy Scriptures; a special type of Jewish literary work that flourished from the 4th to the 12th century.
In contrast to the Jewish literal interpretation peshat, the term "Midrash" represents a deeper exegesis that seeks to penetrate the spirit of the Bible, thoroughly examining its text and drawing deeper conclusions. It is a section of the Oral Torah and includes the interpretation and development of the foundational principles of Jewish teaching contained in the Written Torah.
