Algiers â July 30, 2025
In a strong gesture of regional solidarity, the Algerian government has announced its intention to provide an initial $200 million in financial aid to support the reconstruction of southern Lebanon, following the widespread destruction caused by Israeli military operations in 2024.
The announcement comes ahead of a planned official visit by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to Algiers, where he is expected to meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Discussions are set to focus on bilateral cooperation, including development aid and infrastructure rebuilding projects.
According to sources within the Lebanese Presidential Palace, cited by the Russian news agency TASS, Algeria has committed to this amount as a first phase of support, with the potential for additional funding based on Lebanonâs reconstruction needsâparticularly in war-damaged areas of the south.
The pledge arrives at a critical time for Lebanon, which continues to struggle with a severe economic crisis compounded by infrastructural devastation. Lebanese officials and citizens alike have praised Algeriaâs move as a âbrotherly actâ that reinforces historic ties between the two nations.
The Lebanese government has welcomed the initiative and indicated that the funds will be directed toward the rehabilitation of roads, electricity and water systems, and healthcare facilities in the hardest-hit regions.
Algeriaâs contribution adds to a growing international response. Just weeks ago, the World Bank announced a $250 million financing package under its "LEAP" project to support emergency reforms and rebuild essential infrastructure in Lebanon. The plan is part of a broader framework that may reach $1 billion in total support over the coming years.
Historically, Algeria has stood as one of Lebanonâs strongest Arab allies, offering both political support and humanitarian aid during past crises.
