BOZO GOES TO JAIL. BIG DAY!
The Attorney General's Office (PGR) presented its final arguments in the criminal action against Jair Bolsonaro and seven other defendants, accusing them of being the "crucial core" of the attempted coup d'état. The opinion, signed by Paulo Gonet, calls for the conviction of all defendants, highlighting Bolsonaro as the "main orchestrator" of the plot, which aimed at the rupture of the Democratic Rule of Law. The sentences for Bolsonaro could reach 43 years in prison, but the PGR did not request his immediate imprisonment. The decision on a possible preventive detention rests with Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
The PGR accuses Bolsonaro of five crimes, including coup d'état and organized crime, and states that he and other defendants attempted to maintain power after the defeat in the 2022 elections. The final arguments document mentions that the accused created a "climate of social upheaval" and attempted to attract the Army to the coup plot. The accusation also reveals that there was a plan to attack institutions, which was brought to Bolsonaro's attention, and he agreed with the action.
The PGR's indictment also mentions that the defendants contemplated violent actions, such as the use of weapons against authorities and the attempted poisoning of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The accusation highlights that the attempted coup did not materialize due to the loyalty of the Armed Forces to the Constitution. The trial of the defendants will be a crucial moment for defining the legal consequences of the coup plot.
