On June 28, 2025, the first football tournament in China, Robo League, among autonomous humanoid robots took place in Beijing, serving as preparation for the 2025 World Robot Games. Four teams from leading universities participated, including the THU Robotics team from Tsinghua University, which defeated the Mountain Sea team with a score of 5:3. The matches were played in a 3-on-3 format, each lasting two halves of 10 minutes. The robots operated completely autonomously, using artificial intelligence, cameras, and sensors to recognize the ball and coordinate their actions.
The level of robot play is compared to the skills of five-year-old children, but the organizers are confident that technology will soon allow robots to compete with human teams. The tournament highlighted the progress in AI and robotics development, as well as China's ambition to lead in this field. According to Morgan Stanley, the robotics market in China will grow to $108 billion by 2028. Such competitions contribute to the development of technologies for industry, logistics, and medicine.
