#USNationalDebt

Two more than 36.2 trillion dollars. This figure represents the total amount of money that the U.S. federal government owes to its creditors. The debt has steadily increased due to accumulated budget deficits.

Below is a more detailed breakdown:

Total Gross National Debt: As of June 4, 2025, it amounted to 36.21 trillion dollars.

Debt held by the public: It was 28.95 trillion dollars.

Intragovernmental debt: It was 7.26 trillion dollars.

National debt is the total accumulated borrowing by the government to cover its expenses when they exceed its revenues. Importantly, the national debt does not include the debt of state and local governments, nor personal debt.

The debt ceiling, which is the maximum amount the government can borrow, was reset on January 2, 2025, at 36.1 trillion dollars. The Treasury Department has implemented extraordinary measures to manage the debt ceiling, but these are expected to be exhausted in the coming months, possibly by the end of May or June, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
